The Albanian coast is separated from Italy by the Adriatic Sea, at its narrowest point only 73 km from it. Almost half of Albania's area is covered by the mountains in the east of the country. The long stretches of coastline, with the plains behind them, are surrounded by the mountains. Albania's neighboring countries include Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia, and Greece.

Albania has been struggling for many years with the transformation process from a former socialist planned economy to a modern, open market economy. Although the Albanian economy has been growing steadily for years, structural problems are hindering stronger growth.

When it comes to infrastructure, Albania still lags far behind the European average. The first motorway was completed in 2000. The few existing motorways are currently toll-free. Albania's most important port is the port of Durrës, located 30 km from the capital, Tirana. Tirana and Durrës are growing steadily due to a continuing rural exodus from the poorer mountain regions and the south.
