Hungary lies to the east of the centre of Europe and is surrounded by seven neighbouring countries. The major rivers Danube and Tisza run through the country, which has the largest lake (Lake Balaton) in Central Europe. Although Hungary therefore serves as a transit country for freight forwarders and logistics companies between the Balkans, Western and Northern Europe, the strong competitive pressure from its immediate neighbours and, not least, domestic political impasses have significantly slowed down Hungary's upswing. However, the accession of Romania (2007) and Croatia (2013) to the EU has opened up new prospects for Hungary, making it an interesting location for the warehousing and freight forwarding industry. Hungary's direct neighbours include: Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia.

Since joining the EU, Hungary has also invested heavily in expanding its infrastructure. Hungary has a radial motorway network with five main routes leading to the conurbation of Budapest. The complete expansion with the motorways already planned will certainly take some time. The M43 motorway in the south-west has been completed in order to cope with the increasing transport volume caused by Romania's accession to the European Single Market. The further expansion of motorways close to the border to connect with neighbouring countries is planned and has already been partially completed. Hungary currently has around 1375 km of motorways and motorways. With a few exceptions, the main routes are subject to tolls.
